This grade seven student’s project explored the impact of his ancestor, Ezra Churchill of Hantsport, Nova Scotia. Merchant, shipbuilder, and politician, Ezra Churchill had a varied career in the 19th century and this student uses the engaging metaphor of the sea to help us understand its consequences. In the centre is the Port of Causes. Around it is an inner oval, the “haut-fonds” – shoals or shallows – of intended consequences of Churchill’s career such as founding a naval shipyard and his election to the provincial assembly. Around that is a larger oval, the high seas of unintended consequences such as Ezra Churchill’s children being in good health because of the wealth he gained.
